Social Media and the work place.

So maybe it's just me, but I have noticed that because of my interest in Social Media, I find myself ahead of a few curves in the work place.
We all see our friends and fellow Social Media users submissions and stories. These stories and submissions generally are way ahead of the main stream media, which is a good thing. Many times have I found that what the main stream has reported is inaccurate, and sometimes the best stuff is left unreported.
Take last week for example, a training class was working a presentation for a client and had to do very low budget and on the fly. Throughout my dealings in Social Media I had answers to all their questions. "Jay I need to convert and MP3 to a .wav file but I have to chop it up a bit." I simply respond "Go to SourceForge.net and download Audacity, make sure you also download the LAME Mp3 Codec." They were floored, where did I find out this bit of info? Social Media of course.
I also stay on top of world events and tech news. Some said they wanted to with a specific phone, I told them about all the bugs and issues there were with it and to not migrate just yet. Sure enough a few days later the issues were fixed.
Another friend of mine wanted to find color pallets for the website he was working on for a client, I directed him to Colourlovers.com. It is a website I found out about through Social Media as well and I also now know the owner Darius Monsef through my Social Media dealings. Good dude by the way.
So taking what you know about the internet through your friends sharing it with you can help you get ahead in business. But please surf responsibly.
